On April 4th, 2023, Gujarat Titans made a significant announcement about replacing their injured player Kane Williamson. The franchise revealed that Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan all-rounder, will take over the reins of the New Zealand skipper for the rest of the IPL 2023 season.
The unfortunate injury to Kane Williamson’s right leg during the first match against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 31st, 2023, resulted in him being ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2023. Williamson’s absence is a significant setback for Gujarat Titans, as the New Zealand captain is regarded as one of the most dependable batters in the world.
On the other hand, During Sri Lanka’s tour of India in 2023, Dasun Shanaka, the 29-year-old all-rounder and Sri Lankan skipper showed exceptional form, having scored 124 runs and picked two wickets in the three-match T20 series against India.
Despite having an impressive record of scoring more than 3,702 runs in 181 T20s with an average of 28.04 and a strike rate of 141.94, it remains to be seen whether Dasun Shanaka will get a chance in the playing XI for Gujarat Titans due to stiff competition for places in the team.
