Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh batter, faced an unexpected dismissal during the second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand in Dhaka. He became the first Bangladeshi cricketer across formats to be given out for handling the ball.
The incident occurred in the post-lunch session on Day One when Mushfiqur Rahim, batting confidently on 35, encountered a delivery from pacer Kyle Jamieson. As he defended the ball, it bounced past the stumps, leading Mushfiqur to touch it with his right hand intentionally.
The New Zealand fielders appealed immediately for obstructing the field dismissal. The on-field umpires conferred before referring the decision to the TV umpire for a detailed review of the incident.
Following a comprehensive review, the TV umpire adjudged that Mushfiqur Rahim had intentionally handled the ball, obstructing the field. This unprecedented decision made Rahim the first Bangladeshi batter to face such a dismissal across international cricket. In the history of Test cricket, Rahim became the eighth cricketer overall to be dismissed in such a manner.
