Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal has bid farewell to international cricket, marking the end of a glorious career that spanned 16 years. Considered one of the greatest players from Bangladesh, Tamim’s retirement announcement came as a surprise to many. During a press conference held in Chattogram, the Bangladesh ODI captain emotionally shared his decision, which came just three months before the World Cup.
The news of Tamim’s retirement came from Bangladesh’s defeat in the first ODI against Afghanistan. Tamim reflected on his decision, saying, “This is the end for me. I have given my best. I have tried my best. I am retiring from international cricket from this moment.”
He further added, “Yesterday against Afghanistan was my last international game. It was not a sudden decision. I was thinking about different reasons. I don’t want to mention here. I have spoken to my family members about it. I thought this is the right time for me to retire from international cricket.”
Tamim’s contributions to Bangladesh cricket are undeniable. He represented his country in 70 Tests, 241 ODIs, and 78 T20Is. Additionally, he participated in 248 T20 league matches across the globe. The Bangladesh Cricket Board is yet to announce the new ODI captain following Tamim’s retirement. Liton Das is the Test captain, while Shakib Al Hasan leads the team in the T20 format. It is worth mentioning that Tamim retired from T20Is at the same time last year.
