WATCH: Angelo Mathews Makes International Cricket History With “Timed Out” Dismissal

In the thrilling showdown between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the ODI World Cup, Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews was dismissed unusually and rarely – as “timed out.”

What Is Timed Out Law?

The “timed out” rule, according to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), states that following a wicket or a batter’s retirement, the incoming batter must be prepared to face the next ball or allow the other batter to be ready within three minutes. Failure to meet this requirement results in the incoming batter being declared “timed out.”

After the dismissal of Sadeera Samaravikrama, Angelo Mathews came to bat. However, a minor delay ensued as Mathews had to replace his helmet. He asked a substitute player to bring another helmet onto the field, but it took three minutes for the new helmet to arrive.

Bangladeshi players subsequently called for a time-out as per the rules. The umpire accepted their request and paused the game, declaring Mathews “timed out.”

Despite Mathews’ attempts to clarify the situation and explain to Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan that the delay was due to the damaged helmet, the opposition was unwavering in their appeal.
